There's no universal "best" Mölnlycke product. I spent my first two years in this job looking for one. Spoiler: it doesn't exist.

Quick background so you know where I'm coming from. I handle wound care and surgical supply orders for a regional hospital group. Seven years in. I've personally made—and documented—11 significant product-selection mistakes, totaling roughly $14,000 in wasted budget. If you're trying to figure out which Mölnlycke products you actually need, you're probably in one of three buckets:

Mölnlycke HealthCare: Company Overview

Mölnlycke is a Swedish medical company headquartered in Gothenburg. It started back in 1849 as a cotton producer, and today it focuses on two areas: wound care and surgical solutions. You'll see both "Mölnlycke Health Care" and "Mölnlycke HealthCare" in different markets—same company.

The main product families:

  • Wound care: Mepilex (foam dressings), Mepiform (scar management), Melgisorb (alginate dressings)
  • Surgical gloves: Biogel
  • Surgical drapes and gowns: Barrier

Here's the trap: the brand name doesn't tell you which product is right. Mepilex alone has multiple variants, and they're not interchangeable. Neither are the gloves. Neither are the drapes for a fluoroscopy-guided case. You have to match the product to the setting.

This was accurate as of Q4 2024. Clinical product details evolve, so verify current specs before you order.

Scenario A: You're Managing Chronic Wounds

If you're dealing with pressure injuries, venous leg ulcers, or diabetic foot wounds, you'll spend most of your time in the Mepilex family.

My first-year mistake (2018): I assumed a foam dressing is a foam dressing. I ordered a standard Mepilex Border for a wound that needed a higher-absorbency option. The order looked perfect on paper. The clinical team rejected about 70% of it. A $3,200 order, roughly $2,200 wasted, plus a week's delay for the reorder. Not ideal, but a great teacher.

What I should have checked: exudate level, wound location, skin fragility, and any signs of infection. Some Mepilex variants handle higher exudate. Some include silver for infection risk. Some are designed to sit under compression bandaging. If you're not sure which fits your patient population, the manufacturer's instructions for use list clear indications. Read them.

One thing worth knowing: Safetac is Mölnlycke's silicone adhesive technology. That's why these dressings peel off without tearing fragile skin. For elderly patients especially, that's a genuine advantage. But it doesn't mean every dressing in the family is right for every wound.

Bottom line for Scenario A: match the dressing to the wound, not to the brand.

Scenario B: You're in the Operating Room

OR selection is a different game. You're not just picking a dressing. You're picking gloves, drapes, and gowns that have to work with the instruments and imaging being used. Two learnings here, both expensive.

First: glove selection affects surgical precision. When a surgeon is holding a scalpel or tying sutures, tactile feedback depends on the glove. The Biogel range is built with this in mind—sensitivity plus barrier protection, with some variants coated for easier donning on dry hands. That coating can be a dealbreaker for long cases.

In 2022, I ordered standard Biogel gloves in bulk without asking which variant the orthopedic team preferred. Twenty boxes of a perfectly good product sat unopened because it wasn't what the surgeons actually wanted. $890 of redo, plus a 1-week delay.

Second: fluoroscopy changes the draping strategy. If you searched "what is fluoroscopy," here's the short version. It's real-time x-ray imaging—a continuous live view of the inside of the body. It's common in orthopedic surgery, pain management, and vascular work. The surgeon watches a screen while moving instruments and confirming placement in real time.

Why does that matter to someone buying supplies? Because fluoroscopy cases need drapes that don't interfere with the imaging and can handle fluids—contrast dye and irrigation show up constantly. Barrier drapes with fluid collection pouches are the usual answer. But "usual" isn't "always." The surgical team's preference card lists the exact drape size and fenestration they expect. Ask for it.

Honestly, I'm not sure why two surgical teams in the same hospital can need completely different drape setups for the same-named procedure. My best guess: surgeon habits and patient positioning. But it means you can't read the procedure name and guess.

Scenario C: You're Supporting Prosthetic Limb and Post-Amputation Patients

This is the area that cost me the most, because the logic is so counterintuitive.

After an amputation, the residual limb has to learn to bear weight inside a prosthetic socket. The skin goes through friction, shear, sweat, and pressure it was never designed for. Good wound care matters, but the rules are different.

The mistake: September 2022. A patient's post-op wound was draining, and I recommended a thick, high-absorbency foam dressing. My logic: more absorption equals more protection. Wrong. The added bulk changed the socket fit, and a poor socket fit causes more skin breakdown than the original wound ever did. The prosthetist had to redo the fitting. The patient's rehab was set back weeks. Worse, it was entirely preventable. Frustrating doesn't begin to cover it.

The lesson: for residual limbs under a prosthesis, thinner is usually better. A dressing has to be conformable, low-profile, and able to handle moisture without losing its shape. What works on an abdominal incision doesn't automatically work on a residual limb.

Later, once the wound is fully closed, scar management comes into play. Mepiform, a thin silicone sheet, is sometimes used for that. But that's a post-healing stage, not an acute wound stage. Confusing the two delayed a referral recommendation once in my case. Don't repeat that.

And the honest truth: the right choice depends on time since surgery, tissue quality, whether the patient already has a socket, and variables I'm still learning. The only reliable way to get it right is to talk to the prosthetist. Not the brochure.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

Most teams I meet sit mainly in one bucket. Here's how to identify yours:

  • Where does the product actually get used? Wards and outpatient clinics = Scenario A. The OR = Scenario B. Rehab and prosthetics = Scenario C.
  • Whose feedback matters most? Wound nurses push for absorbency and atraumatic removal. Surgeons talk about glove feel and visibility under fluoroscopy. Prosthetists obsess over bulk and conformability.
  • Where do your past mistakes cluster? That's the best signal. My $14,000 breakdown: about 40% chronic wound selections, 40% OR glove and drape choices, 20% post-amputation. Your pattern will differ, but it's worth mapping.

There's overlap, obviously. But one bucket usually drives most of your purchasing decisions.

The Pre-Check That Would Have Saved Me $14,000

This is the checklist I've used since Q2 2024. It's not sophisticated. It just forces me to verify instead of assume.

  1. Confirm the clinical setting. Wound clinic, OR, or rehab?
  2. Confirm the care stage. Acute healing, chronic wound, intraoperative, or post-op rehab?
  3. Ask about imaging guidance. Is this a fluoroscopy case? If yes, verify drape size and fenestration with the OR team.
  4. Ask about weight-bearing. Will the dressing sit under a prosthetic socket or compression device? If yes, bulk is your enemy.
  5. Confirm with the actual user. A 2-minute conversation with the charge nurse, surgeon, or prosthetist beats 2 hours of guessing.

Since I started using this, we've caught 47 potential errors in 18 months. Every one of those was an order that would have been rejected or needed rework. 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction.

If you're new to Mölnlycke products—or any supplier, really—I hope you get to skip the $14,000 tuition I paid. The products are good. The selection process just needs to be intentional.
